Client Background
The Alberta Museums Association
(AMA), founded in 1971, is a leading professional organization that
facilitates and supports museums in Alberta, Canada. With the completion
of a previous strategic plan and selection of a new Director, AMA
staff and board elected to launch a proactive planning process to
create an innovative vision for Alberta museums.
Description of Process/Project
Based on previous work
with AMA, GA&A was selected to guide an institutional assessment
and planning process that embraced participation and constituent
input to build a balanced and visionary strategic plan. GA&A
engaged AMA Board and Secretariat (staff), surveyed AMA membership
and key Canadian museum leaders and held forums to incorporate the
voices of a widespread geographic member base. To round out this
highly participatory process, AMA previewed a strategic framework
at its Annual General Meeting to gain additional member feedback
and buy in. The final adoption of the Insitutional Plan will occure
in May 2011.
Outcome
AMA utilized this planning
method to capitalize on a pivotal moment by embracing the power
of museums to not only be cultural centers but also be agents of
change and improve the quality of life within the province.
